Job Site Safety,
Training & Compliance
Safety
Bast Hatfield prides itself in promoting a safe and drug free work environment. Striving daily for a 100% safe workplace, "in full compliance" has become the way we think, move and build each day, on every job site.
To accomplish this goal, we begin with a mandatory four-hour safety training program for all new employees. Even after receiving clearance to go out in the field, our safety training does not end. Continued training, as well as specialized training and certification is available for all employees on an ongoing basis.
BHI’s commitment to making safety a priority on all job sites has resulted in a New York State contractor safety performance EMR of .72 for 2008, versus the State average of 1.0. Another measure of BHI’s safety performance is its Average Recordable Incident Rate, which is one-third the national average for general contractors.
Bast Hatfield facilitates and promotes safety training and safety awareness through the following programs.
Training
- Mandatory 4 hour safety training for new employees
- OSHA 10 and 30 hour course
- Daily job site visits by the Safety Director
Apprenticeship
BHI created an apprentice program for masonry and carpentry in 1988, one of the first approved in the country. Those who graduate are recognized by New York State as a qualified journey-person, and receive accreditation from the National Center for Construction Education & Research.
Pioneering the way, one of BHI's own superintendents, John Barss, not only successfully completed the program, but also went on to win the ABC National Craft Olympics in 1991. Many who have completed the apprenticeship program are currently employed in managerial positions at BHI.
